Haunted by the King of Death (Eternal Mates Romance Series Book 11)

Felicity Heaton

A ruthless vampire warrior, Grave Van der Garde rules the mercenary Preux Chevaliers with an iron fist, determined to retain his hard-won position as one of the most powerful men in Hell and his reputation as the heartless King of Death. But beneath the cold façade beats the heart of a vampire torn between love and hate, ripped in two directions by a single ethereally beautiful female—his fated phantom mate.

Driven by her phantom instincts, Isla used a spell to make her solid in order to deceive the vampire who killed her sister’s demon mate and have revenge on him, condemning him with a single kiss to become a phantom too. But her plan took an unexpected turn when she fell in love with him, and with her new life, and the night she betrayed him shattered both of their hearts. Now, he lives to make her suffer through their connection, one that is fading with them as they begin to slip into the phantom world, and she must face the monster she created if she is to save herself and the vampire she still loves.

With a demon from Grave’s past determined to destroy him and everything he holds dear, and the clock ticking down to their inevitable doom, can he and Isla overcome their past and their pride to work together to claim the future they both desire deep in their hearts? Or will death finally catch up with the vampire king and his phantom mate?

Haunted by the King of Death – Excerpt

Grave kicked off hard, his left boot skidding on the loose black earth as he propelled himself to his right. He rolled across the ground, evading the meaty fist that had been aimed at his head and came up on his feet. Behind him, the demon male turned on a snarl and Grave dipped his body low and swept his left leg out in a swift arc, catching the male across the back of his knees as he launched another attack.

The large demon hit the earth with a thud and a growl, and Grave sprang to his feet, scooped up his fallen blade and brought it down in a fast arc, little more than a blur of silver cutting through the low evening light of the Seventh Realm.

It sliced through the demon’s neck just as easily.

Blood sprayed in a burst of crimson and then dwindled to a steady trickle that pumped in time with the male’s heart as it slowed to a halt.

Grave breathed hard, the scent of blood overwhelming as it drenched the churned earth and the bodies strewn across it. Several of his men had fallen, their corpses resting in tangled heaps beside those of their allies, the demons of the Seventh Realm, and their enemies, the demons of the Sixth.

He licked his bloodied fangs, savouring the rich tang of his victims. The darkness within him pushed harder and he embraced it, savoured it as he savoured the blood. Nurtured it.

Asher, his second in command, a male with ice blond hair stained crimson in places, halted beside him for a heartbeat, long enough to check on him and give a brief nod before he kicked off, a blur in the falling darkness.

The male knew better than to coddle him in battle, or question him, although it had been clear he had wanted to do both.

With a low snarl, Grave stalked forwards, prowling through the fallen demons and vampires, his scarlet eyes locked ahead of him on the battle where it had moved back towards the border.

They were winning, driving out the demons of the Sixth Realm who had dared to invade the Seventh.

The battle still raged, hundreds of demons of the Sixth Realm, marked by their golden-brown horns, chestnut hair and golden eyes, clashed against his men and the demons of the Seventh. The sound of war filled his ears, and his heart, the constant din of battle axes and swords striking and agonised bellows as warriors fell mingled with shouts of victory.

Gods, he loved war.

Courted it almost as fervently as he courted his bloodlust.

Foolish were the vampires who feared it.

He licked his fangs and bit back a moan as he thought about sinking them into demon flesh together with his claws, tearing apart his foes to sate the dark hunger riding him.

A dark hunger that gave him strength, power to defeat any foe he met in battle. Bloodlust that had given him the reputation he had fought for and deserved. A reputation that meant more to him than anything else.

Two large demons of the Sixth Realm cut down one from the Seventh and turned his way, slow smiles curving their lips as they saw he was alone. Fools. They thought they could end him?

He laughed as he flexed his fingers around the black and red hilt of his katana, the sound so out of place in the midst of battle that it gave the demons pause.

Grave used it to his advantage.

With all the preternatural speed of his kind, he closed the gap between them and had his blade buried hilt-deep in the gut of the demon on the right before the male had even seen him. The male let out a garbled cry and the other one turned on him, raising his double-axe to cut Grave down.

He left his blade in the stomach of the first demon and spun to face the second. The axe came down fast and he grunted as he raised his right arm above his head and the thick black handle struck his forearm. Pain splintered in a ring where it had hit, warning of a fracture. Grave paid his body no heed and snarled as he shoved upwards, knocking the axe and the male’s arm up with it.

The demon staggered backwards and Grave sprung forwards, sank the claws of his right hand deep into the demon’s fleshy left shoulder and bit down hard on the right side of his throat. The male roared and grabbed him, and Grave’s fangs tore through his neck as he was ripped away.

He flew through the air and landed hard on a corpse with a grunt.

Bastard.

He licked his fangs and pushed onto his feet, coming to face his foe again.

One of his men was there already, battling the demon male, and Grave growled low in his throat at the sight, the darkness that flowed through his veins growing blacker as his mind whispered dangerous words, taunting him with the fact someone had stolen his prey.

He had been weak again, and now someone had taken what was his.

He hunched forwards and roared out his fury, and both the demon and the vampire stopped with their axe and sword in mid swing.

He would kill both of them. The demon for the fun of it and the vampire because the impudent bastard had stolen his prey.

No one took what was his.

No one.

He ran at both males and the vampire was gone in a flash, disappearing from the fray like the pathetic creature he was. He would deal with him later. He snarled as the demon swung the axe at him and threw himself feet first under the blow, skidding across the ground and ending up next to the first demon.

Grave grinned.

He wrapped his fingers around the hilt of his sword and slowly pulled it free of the corpse as he rose onto his feet.

His senses warned of the demon behind him.

He took his time wiping the blade clean on the corpse’s leathers.

Could almost feel the fetid breath of the second demon on the back of his neck and hear the whisper of death as the axe sliced through the air aimed for his head.

Fool.

Grave dropped to his knees and the demon’s axe cut through the air above him. He twisted as he shoved onto his feet and arced his blade upwards, cutting across the demon’s broad chest. The male bellowed and stumbled back two steps before recovering and swinging the axe again. Grave dodged right but the blade nicked his shoulder, cutting through his black shirt, and the scent of his own blood laced the air, strong on his senses.

He saw red.

In a blur of speed, he came around behind the demon and drove his sword forwards, piercing deep into the male’s side, a wound meant to slow rather than kill.

This one had cut him, and that meant this one died by his fangs.

The male staggered forwards and tried to turn, but Grave leaped on his back and tipped him off balance. The demon landed face first on the bloodied black earth and Grave slammed into his bare back. He grabbed the demon’s left horn and yanked his head back as he struck hard, sinking his fangs into the right side of his throat. The male struggled, bucking wildly, and Grave bit deeper and raked his fangs through the male’s flesh, cutting long grooves into his skin. Blood poured from the wound, flowing so quickly he almost choked on it as he tried to swallow it all, his bloodlust demanding he didn’t waste a drop.

He gulped it down and groaned as the demon’s struggles weakened and his heart began to falter. There was no sweeter thrill than this for him, not anymore. War. Gods how he craved it.

Each blow that bruised his flesh, shattered bone and tore muscle.

Each dance with death.

He would wage war for free, but the Preux Chevaliers traditionally worked for the highest bidder, and who was he to turn down a tidy sum of gold?

He had been raised an aristocrat, born to one of the most powerful pureblood vampire families, and as an aristocrat he had grown accustomed to a certain level of comfort and convenience, and that required money.

He wasn’t an elite, those born to a family with lowly turned humans in their ranks or sired by such a creature.

He was an aristocrat.

A pureblood.

As all in the Preux Chevaliers were.

They were the most powerful of their kind. Faster, stronger, superior in every way to an elite. Bred from the purest blood, able to trace their ancestry back to the elves.

But with pure blood came what many in the vampire world viewed as a terrible curse—bloodlust.

He released the demon when his heart gave out and sat back on him, breathing hard and grinning as his blood thundered in his veins, pleasure rolling hot and sweet through him.

Pleasure his bloodlust gave to him.

Pleasure that had become his everything.

Only a fool would deny themselves the ecstasy of sating their bloodlust. With every step closer to the edge that he took, that ecstasy only grew more intense, more satisfying, until he was chasing the next high, aching for it to be better than the last.

His crimson eyes scanned the battle that had moved further from him, nearing the black mountains that formed the border between the Seventh Realm and the Devil’s domain, the path the demons of the Sixth had taken to avoid entering the Fifth to reach the Seventh.

He gave himself another minute to savour the high of his kill and then lumbered onto his feet, pulled his blade free and cleaned it on the dead male’s dark gold leathers. He could feel his bloodlust fading again, satisfied for now, but it would soon rise again, returning to embrace him and deliver him another high, and another victory.

Grave prowled through the corpses towards the battle, itching with the need to hurl himself into another fight, to feel fists striking his flesh and cracking his bones. The darkness that had been ebbing away began to flow back again, slowly filling his veins as he stalked towards his next victim, hungry for more.

Itching for another fix.

He singled out the male he had decided led the Sixth Realm demons, one who stood at least three inches taller than the rest and he had caught barking orders at the others. He wielded his broadsword with devastating skill, cutting down a demon of the Seventh and injuring one of Grave’s men in the process. The demon commander whirled to face three vampires who had come up behind him, and Grave snarled as he spotted his second in command among them.

“Asher,” Grave barked and the blond looked in his direction. Grave shifted his gaze from him to the demon and snarled, “Mine.”

Out of the corner of his eye, Asher bowed his head and signalled to his two men, and together they backed away from the demon as he turned to face Grave.

The male shoved bloodstained fingers through his wild chestnut hair, preening it back from his face, and smirked at him. Crimson coated every inch of his broad bare chest and had soaked into his deep gold leathers, forming dark veins across the material. The demon flexed the fingers of his other hand around the hilt of his broadsword, a blade that matched Grave in height, and stared him down, his golden eyes glowing brightly in the darkness.

“Come, Little Vampire.” The warrior crooked a clawed finger, his English sounding rough with his demonic accent, and grinned again, flashing fangs as his horns curled from behind his pointed ears, twisting around like a ram’s. “Let us see who is the true King of Death.”

Grave readied his blade and pressed the ball of his right foot into the black earth, preparing to launch at the male and do just that.

Darkness rolled over the land, visceral power that pressed down on him and chilled his blood.

Around him, the battle stilled, warriors frozen in position, locked in combat for a heartbeat before they all broke apart and turned as one towards the black mountains.

Grave looked there.

A male stood on a huge rock at the base of the mountain, just metres beyond the edge of the battle. He towered over them, black eyes surveying every warrior below him, gold elliptical pupils flashing as his gaze shifted quickly from one male to the next. His stance was casual, the black gauntlet covering the lower half of his right arm resting on the hilt of a huge black broadsword that stood beside him, the point buried into the solid rock, but Grave had the feeling this male hadn’t come to the edge of the Devil’s domain just to watch them fight.

The demon straightened and curled his clawed fingers over the pommel of his sword as his black eyebrows pinched low and his broad lips flattened.

Grave watched him closely, wary of the newcomer. He was young, appearing little more than in his early twenties to mortal eyes, but that meant nothing when it came to demons, especially those of the Devil’s ranks.

This male could easily decimate both sides of the warriors gathered before him.

It was rare for one of his kind to leave the Devil’s realm, although as far as Grave could tell, the male still stood within the threshold of his dark lord’s lands.

The sensation of death and power that he exuded seemed to grow stronger as he searched the faces of the warriors, and many of them began backing away from him, some of the Preux Chevaliers included.

Grave remained where he was, beyond the line of demons and vampires now forming between him and the newcomer.

The young male ran the claws of his left gauntlet around the curve of his polished black horn and then ran the pad of his thumb across the pointed tip. They looked as if they had been sharpened, made even more deadly.

The longer Grave watched him, the stronger a sensation within him grew, a feeling that he knew the male even though he also felt sure he had never met him before.

He was oddly familiar.

But then, most demons looked the same to him.

The male’s broad bare chest shifted in a deep sigh and he moved his left foot, his shoulders twisting as he went to turn away.

His eyes landed on Grave.

He stilled and narrowed his gaze, and his demeanour darkened, the sense of power that flowed from him becoming a crushing wave as he turned back to face him and lifted his left hand.

Pointed right at Grave.

“You,” the male snarled through sharp fangs and Grave had half a mind to point a finger at his chest and blink hard.

Instead, he remained perfectly still and held his calm façade even as a question pounded in his mind.

What had he done to deserve the bastard’s attention?

EXCERPT

“So, am I at the top of the list?” Xander asks standing and leaning in to give me another virtuous kiss.
Laughing against his lips, I slide along the wall to escape his kiss. I make my way toward the door, making an extra effort to shake my ass as I walk across the room. “Almost. You got some more work to do.”
My vagina is freaking numb and tingling as I make my way into the ladies room. After using the bathroom I check my make up to make sure I don’t look like I just had a mind blowing orgasm in the green room before going back out into the bar.
When I step out of the ladies room Xander is leaning against the wall waiting for me surrounded by three women. Normal girls would feel jealous and have their claws out within seconds, ready to scratch their eyes out. But not me. All I have to do I take a step and feel that delicious sensation between my legs and remember where his mouth just was that they are gawking at.
Unless they want to taste my snatch I suggest they move on to another conquest.
“Ready?” He asks, as I approach causing the girls to turn their attention from him to me.
I flash them a mega-watt Hollywood smile, “yup. I need a good strong drink. Especially after that performance.” I can barely keep a straight face as I walk up and take his hand to pull him from the wall.
One of the girls beams up at him, “oh my gosh I know! Wasn’t he amazing tonight? That performance was one of your best yet.”
Oh how true that is. If only she knew the performance I am actually referencing. She is right, it was one of his best yet.
Xander excuses himself from the groupies and finally after what feels like an eternity we make it to the bar. His bandmates are still hanging out at the stage talking with the fans, mainly girls. I spot Savannah, Kayden, Reagan, Jacob and Zak at the bar.
“Hey guys! So what did you think? They totally rocked, right?” I ask sliding up onto a bar stool beside Savannah.
Kayden has his arm around Savannah, while sipping on a cup of ice water. Setting it down, he reaches his free hand out clapping Xander on the shoulder, “You guys are really good. You’ve got a unique sound that I think will help get you far in the industry. You can branch out into other genres and in the music business right now that’s really important. I will definitely be adding y’all to my iPod.”
“You missed the other show here tonight.” Reagan interjects. I can’t help but notice the sly smile on his face and Savannah’s cheeks grow red like they always do when she’s put on the spot.
Resting my hands on my hips I ask shouting over the music, “what did I miss?!”
Jacob sets his beer down and stands next to Kayden to rest his arm on Kayden’s shoulder and beaming ear to ear, “Savannah here helped me win a hundred bucks tonight.”
“What?” I ask whipping my head from Jacob to Savannah.
“Yup. I lost a hundred frickin’ dollars to this jackass.” Kayden says bitterly, but his lips curl up just enough for me to tell he’s only yanking Jacob’s chain.
“I rode the mechanical bull! Can you believe it?! And not just for a second but thirty seconds!”
Reagan lets out a loud chuckle, “I told her all the wild cowboy sex she’s been having prepared her for that moment.”
I am the one laughing now. I press my palm to my side to try and stop the cramp forming in my stomach from laughing so hard. “Oh my God Reagan that is so something I would say! Gosh, I’ve missed you!” I tell him pulling him in for a hug. “Now get me a drink. I need a Jack and Coke. STAT.”

Her Avenging Angel – Excerpt

Nevar beat his black wings and swooped lower over the inhospitable obsidian basalt fields. Heat rose from the glowing orange cracks where lava had broken through, creating a pattern of deadly veins across the land. As far as he could see all around him, it was the same, an endless grim plain that would be impossible to traverse on foot.

Had the destroyer come this way?

He rubbed his jaw as he flew. It still ached from the blow the Devil had personally delivered. A punch that had sent him flying across the black courtyard of the Devil’s formidable fortress and crashing into the obsidian spires of rock that formed a sweeping curve around it.

His leg burned with the memory too. The damned spires were still repairing themselves after the battle that had taken place there several months ago, spewing lava from their broken tips and slowly climbing high into the thick acrid air. When he had struck the wall, his impact had created a fissure and lava had bled through, singeing his right thigh before he could escape it.

He growled, grinding his teeth, his head filled with black thoughts, dark desires to head back to the fortress and punish every Hell’s angel who had been present for his humiliation. The minions of the Devil had paused at their work to repair the courtyard flagstones and had laughed as he had suffered. His fangs lengthened as he pictured tearing into them with claw and tooth before silencing them with his blade and sending them back to Heaven to be reborn as angels of that realm.

They would learn not to laugh at him.

Nevar beat his wings and huffed, giving up the pleasing images and tempting thoughts. If he returned to the fortress, the Devil would kill him. He had threatened to do as much when he had banished Nevar from his sight for a period of seven days.

He wasn’t sure the Devil would come good on the threat to kill him, since he had warned Asmodeus and his cohorts to keep him alive at all costs as he was now the Great Destroyer’s master, but he wasn’t willing to risk it. The Devil had a temper and was liable to lose his head and butcher him, and then regret it afterwards. He had seen the powerful male kill the commander of the First Battalion, the best of the Hell’s angels under his command and a male the Devil had treated like a son, all because he had lost his temper over a bet the commander had won.

What made the whole thing more stupid in Nevar’s eyes was that the bet had been the birth date of Erin’s son, the Devil’s grandson.

The Devil had lost, and had taken his commander’s head for it, and had clearly regretted it afterwards when golden light had engulfed the angel’s body, taking him back to Heaven to be reborn. Nevar had been glad that he hadn’t been included in the bet, and Asmodeus had smiled smugly. The bastard had chosen a date weeks beyond the one his master had selected, ensuring he couldn’t possibly win the bet.

Nevar definitely wasn’t willing to risk his neck by returning to the fortress in order to dish out some vengeance on the Hell’s angels.

Hot air buffeted him and he swerved right, away from the broad expanse of lava river ahead of him. He would have to go around it. His gaze tracked the snaking glowing ribbon in both directions. Impossible. It stretched as far as his eyes could see, illuminating the darkness far into the distance.

He sighed and beat his wings to keep himself steady in the warm thick air.

His stomach growled, reminding him once again that he had forgotten to get something to eat when in the mortal realm.

He couldn’t fly for much longer without feeding and he was damned if he was going to plummet into a pool of lava and get himself killed and sent back to Heaven.

They had scoured Hell for the beast. There was no sign of it.

Had it hidden itself in one of the thousands of caves that dotted the immense landscape of Hell?

He opened a line of telepathic communication with Asmodeus. No sign of it in this direction.

None in this one either. Came the reply.

It was still strange being able to do this with Asmodeus. He had always been able to communicate with other angels of Heaven via telepathy, but had lost that talent when Asmodeus had contracted with him. He had thought the talent gone forever, until recently, when he had been cursing Asmodeus in his head and the angel had heard it and responded.

Asmodeus had never experienced telepathy before that point.

To say it had freaked his master out a little was an understatement.

Any idea at all where it might have gone? Nevar said and heard Asmodeus huff in his head.

The angel wasn’t pleased with his master, the Devil. The Devil had been vague when they had questioned him, eventually admitting that he had no information on where the beast might go.

Yet he’d had the audacity to punish Nevar and Asmodeus for not finding it the first time they had scoured Hell and had sent them back out to look for it again.

His stomach gurgled again, twisting in on itself so hard that he grimaced and rubbed it. He couldn’t concentrate, not with the constant pressing presence of his hunger. It was a weight in his gut that he could no longer ignore.

Maybe we should check the mortal world. It was worth a try.

No response.

I am starving. I am liable to drop into a boiling pit of lava or expire from lack of sustenance alone. You have orders to keep me alive.

Asmodeus grunted in response to that. Very well. Scour the mortal world for the beast and I will send word to Apollyon, and he can alert the others to the situation. Eat while you are there.

Nevar grinned, threw his hand out and cast a portal directly in front of him. He flew through the swirling black vortex, unwilling to linger for even a second in case his master changed his mind. He had a pass and he was taking it.

He landed in the middle of London, on a quiet broad street that bustled with mortals during the day. The rain-soaked pavements and road reflected the lights from the closed stores that lined the road. He stretched and focused to put his wings away. They shrank into his back, aching as they went, slow to do his bidding tonight. It had been weeks since he had used them and it had felt good to fly again. Their reluctance to disappear was his reluctance to see them gone for once. If his stomach had been full, he would have kept flying, taking in the mortal world from the air.

It was as empty as his master’s heart though and he needed to fill it and refuel before he could fly anywhere.

The mark on his chest pulsed, sending fire sweeping over the curve of the beast. He pressed his hand to his breastplate and grimaced, waiting for the pain to subside. When it did, he felt a glimmer of something that distinctly felt like fear.

Fear?

He frowned at that. Perhaps it was his fear. Fear that Asmodeus would come for him again. Fear that he would spend forever trapped in Hell. Fear that the Devil would kill him and send him back to Heaven, to his worst nightmare. Although, he wouldn’t remember what a nightmare it was to him. He would forget everything the moment he died and was reborn as an angel of Heaven. He would forget how Heaven had used him.

He drew in a deep breath and focused on the mark on his chest. Where was the destroyer? If it was awake now, could it sense him? Did it know he was its master? If he stayed in one place for long enough, would it find him and save him from having to search for it?

He still wasn’t sure how such a gigantic beast could elude him and Asmodeus, and the Hell’s angels the Devil had dispatched to hunt for it too.

Unless it wasn’t in Hell.

He had goaded his master into letting him come to the mortal world so he could escape the constant torment and stench of Hell, feeding him a lie about the possibility of it being in this realm. What if it was here though?

There were many remote places on the planet where it could hide.

And it was a big fucking planet.

Nevar groaned. Was he doomed to spend the rest of his life flying around trying to locate the damned thing before it destroyed the world?

If he had to cover an entire planet, he was going to need a serious amount of fuel.

He kept his hand over the mark and pondered where the destroyer might be as he walked the familiar path down the warren of alleys towards Cloud Nine. Despite its grotty and often grim appearance, the club served some of the best food he had eaten in centuries. Full fat, full flavour, bad food. The sort mortals viewed as a future heart attack in the making.

Angels viewed it as superfood.

Fuck those greens and shoots and berries.

Meat oozing with flavour and fat was angelic superfood.

He knew angels who swung the other way when it came to their choice of superfood, preferring the high sugar content of cakes and sweets. Asmodeus was definitely one of those angels. The male could devour a whole chocolate gateaux in one sitting, and he had heard Liora mention in passing that his twin, Apollyon, could do the same.

Nevar could devour a whole spit-roasted pig.

His hand dropped to the bare patch of stomach between the edge of his chest plate and the slats of armour that protected his hips and he rubbed it, his mouth filling with saliva at the thought of the pulled pork buns and chicken wings that the club served.

Fuel up and head out. Do not linger. Do not drink. Understood?

Nevar growled at Asmodeus’s voice in his head and mentally flipped him off.

His master had no faith in him.

That was the plan… and it still is the plan. He severed the connection between them before Asmodeus could respond and turned down the alley that would bring him to Cloud Nine.

He stopped and frowned. The sign was off and there was no queue of mortals, but the club was open. What was going on? Only one way to find out. He walked towards the door.

The bouncer acknowledged him with a jerk of his chin and he pushed past the huge demon male and stepped into the club.

The lights were on inside, the colourful ones above the bar bathing the area and the demons milling around along its length. No music though.

No mortals.

His gaze sought the female he had met before, although he wasn’t sure why. It had been days since his last visit. She would be long gone, and it was stupid of him to hope that she would still be around, or remotely interested in him.

He headed for the bar, his eyes still scanning the demons for the woman even when he told himself to let her go and shove her out of his head.

A blonde cut into his path, her hands firmly planted on her hips, pale against her red jeans. A flicker of darkness danced in her eyes. Her stance caused her chest to jut upwards, showing off ample cleavage in her low cut black camisole. She narrowed her gaze on him and looked as if she was about to lose her pretty façade, revealing the hideous monster that lurked beneath her skin.

The boss.

And she was pissed about something.

He scanned the club again, frowning as he noticed that the demons present were jittery too, disturbed for some reason. Had something happened?

If it had, he wasn’t sure why the boss was holding him responsible, and the intense glare she was giving him said she definitely thought it was his fault.

“Do something,” she snapped, sharp teeth flashing between her glossy red lips, and flicked her short hair away from her face.

He arched an eyebrow down at her. “I don’t follow. What is your problem?”

She turned and pointed, and the crowd parted.

Nevar’s jaw almost dropped.

The female was there, curled up and sleeping on the grimy black bar top, naked again.

But not exposed.

Dark leathery wings wrapped around her slender form, cocooning her.

His feet moved of their own accord, carrying him across the room to her, unable to resist the powerful pull he felt towards her. The demons stepped back, making more room and allowing him and the boss to pass and approach the female.

What was she?
